About

The Australian Centre for Water and Environmental Biotechnology (ACWEB) is an internationally recognised research centre focused on innovative water technology and management.

Established within The University of Queensland in 1996, the Centre's research program initially focused on the challenges of the protection of waterways and the reduction of nutrients in the environment. The Centre led the world in nutrient removal, innovative processes and process control of wastewater treatment plants. The impact of this early work is still being applied today by water authorities both nationally and internationally, and local agri-industries.

25 years on, the Centre still shows great relevance to the global water industry, covering most of the Australian urban water services cycle. Our particular strength is the close integration of biological science, process engineering and informatics. This unique combination forms the basis for ground-breaking research but also offers some exciting opportunities for development and application of user-specific solutions to challenging environmental problems.

The impact of our work is still being applied today by water authorities both nationally and internationally, and local agri-industries.
