Integrating multi-omics for analyses of microbial communities, from the human gut to the wastewater treatment plant

Using metagenomics, metatranscriptomics and metaproteomics, we aim to describe the composition and overall activity of microbial communities, as well as determine the contribution of individual microbial populations to functions of interest. This presentation will focus on how we tackle the challenge of performing relevant experimental studies and computationally integrating data from multiple omic levels, to discover population relationships. Furthermore, an approach to prioritize microbial functions based on reconstructed community-wide metabolic networks is described. The concepts will be illustrated using examples from microbial communities in a biological wastewater treatment plants and human gut microbiota.

Dr Buschart is a postdoctoral fellow in the Eco-Systems Biology group at the Luxembourg Centre for Systems Biomedicine, working on omics analyses of microbial communities.
