Pilot-scale demonstration of carrier-based anammox process for sidestream and mainstream domestic wastewater treatment

ANITAâ„¢ Mox is a one-stage Moving-Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) developed for partial nitrification to nitrite and autotrophic N-removal using anammox microorganisms from N-rich effluents. This deammonification process offers many advantages such as substantial reduction in aeration requirement and sludge production along with the lack of need for an external carbon source. The experience and results of the first pilot-scale trial of ANITA Mox process for sidestream and mainstream deammonification in Brisbane will be presented in this talk. Two MBBR enrichment tanks were set up at the Luggage Point STP to grow anammox microorganisms. A total of 500 litres of K5 carriers covered with active anammox biomass biofilm have been obtained. Both tanks achieved a volumetric removal rate of 1.35 kgN/m3.d or surface removal rate of 3 gN/m2.d. The percentage of ammonium removal achieved was ~80-85%. These performance data are comparable to the data observed for full scale applications of sidestream anammox process. After the successful demonstration of sidestream anammox process, these enriched cultures were used for mainstream anammox trial. The mainstream anammox trail is still ongoing, and the preliminary results will be presented in this talk.

 

Dr. Shihu Hu was awarded his PhD in Chemical Engineering at The University of Queensland in 2010. He also completed a Master of Environmental Engineering at The University of Queensland and a Bachelor of Chemical Engineering at South China University of Technology. Currently, he continues his research as a research fellow at Advanced Water Management Centre.
