PhD Scholarship in an ARC Laureate Fellowship Project

Professor Yuan’s Laureate Fellowship project aims to develop a suite of leading-edge biotechnology solutions to enable the cost-effective production of liquid chemicals from biogas. This will create a much stronger economic driver for biogas production from organic wastes, by significantly increasing the value of biogas compared to its current use for power generation. With a multi-disciplinary approach, the project will substantially advance the fundamental science in the exciting and highly valuable area of anaerobic microbial conversion of methane, the least understood process in the global carbon cycle. The project will support the establishment of a methane-based biotechnology sector creating high-value products from biogas or small, distributed natural gas sources.

Professor Zhiguo Yuan, Director of the Advanced Water Management Centre, has recently been awarded an Australian Laureate Fellowship project. This fellowship scheme has the following objectives (http://www.arc.gov.au/australian-laureate-fellowships):

Opportunity: 

This position is a member of a multi-disciplinary team of 10+ comprising the Laureate Fellow, mid-career researchers, postdoctoral research fellows and fellow PhD students. A high-calibre PhD candidate is sought to undertake ground-breaking research leading to the development of an optimised bioprocess for methane fermentation utilising a systems biology approach with particular emphasis in in silico modelling.

The successful candidate will receive systematic training in bioprocess & operation of gas fermentation and in silico modelling.

The candidate will also develop skills in the theory, use and operation of gas fermentation. 

Selection criteria

  • A bachelor degree (First-Class Hohours) or a Research Master Degree in Biotechnology, Chemical Engineering or related areas;
  • Excellent academic performance evidenced by a high Grade Point Average (GPA);
  • A record of high quality research publications, and
  • International applicants must meet the University of Queensland's English Language Proficiency (ELP) requirements, detailed at http://www.uq.edu.au/grad-school/english-language-proficiency-requirements
