The spread of antibiotic resistance in water environments

Abstract: Antibiotic resistance has become a major threat to public health globally, yet the spread of antibiotic resistance in water environments has been largely overlooked. The common understanding is the overuse and misuse of antibiotics has lead to antibiotic resistance, but emerging contaminations in environments could induce antibiotic resistance as well. Our project is concentrating on understanding the spread of antibiotic resistance in water environments, particularly is working to fill critical knowledge gaps in antibiotic resistance induced by emerging contaminants. It aims to identify potential roles of emerging contaminants in promoting the spread of antibiotic resistance among different microorganisms. In addition, we also plan to develop new processes to control or stop antibiotic resistance transfer from the urban water system to the environment and humans.
