A long hot winter for AWMC researcher

AWMC’s Dr Katrin Doederer can now hang a flight suit next to her lab coat.

Despite being 2018’s AWA Young Water Professional of the Year and an AWMC Research Fellow, Katrin still managed to find time to complete helicopter pilot training.

After receiving her helicopter license late last year, Katrin has taken the opportunity to explore the red centre of Australia as a scenic flight pilot for the winter season.

“I’m fresh out of flight school honing my skills, it is very challenging to go from being a researcher to become a scenic flight pilot”, she said.

“I often get a surprised face when people realize they have me as pilot, but at the end they love it and want a picture to show their friends and family.”

The baking desert heat is hard to handle, with a recent 2-degree drop in temperature (to a toasty 38°C) a spot of good news.

“It is a lot of fun to share the passion for flying and the beautiful landscape of Alice Springs and surrounds,” said Katrin.

While she may have swapped the lab for the cockpit, she is still working on her research and projects so don’t be too surprised if her next paper comes in with a little extra red dust on it.
