Over the past five years, a University of Queensland research centre has published more papers than many entire countries.

UQ’s Advanced Water Management Centre has published 105 papers in Water Research, one of the top journals in water resources, outranking the entire publication contribution from many countries with well-established water research programs.

If AWMC were a country, it would rank 14th globally in terms of publication output in Water Research, putting it on par with Belgium (105),  and ahead of countries such as Japan (101), Italy (98) and Sweden (74).

Australia ranks third on the global list with 364 papers, with approximately 29% of those coming from AWMC for the 2012-2016 period.

That’s right, AWMC makes up for 29% of Australia’s entire publication output for this journal.

Professor Zhiguo Yuan, Director of the Advanced Water Management Centre, said that he was very pleased with this ‘finding’.

“This is a yet another indicator of the high quality research outputs from the Centre’s productive researchers,” said Professor Yuan.

“Very importantly, the AWMC researchers have delivered not only high quality scientific outputs, but also real-world impact.

“The sewer research program alone has delivered cost savings in the order of hundreds of millions of dollars to the Australian water industry.”

The University of Queensland as an organisation currently sits second on the list for publications, after The Chinese Academy of Sciences, however over the entire journals publications history UQ takes first place.

The Web of Science data also shows that Professor Yuan is the second most prolific author on the journals records, with a total of six AWMC authors making the top fifty list.

AWMC researchers also published strongly in other journals with 142 total publications in 2015, and a total of 128 in 2016, across a variety of journals.

Water Research publishes refereed, original research papers on all aspects of the science and technology of water quality and its management worldwide.
