Advanced Water Management Centre

Project Dates: 2017 to 2022

Overview

Agricultural industries are among the largest land users, water consumers and organic waste producers within Australia. In particular, red meat processing facilities can generate large volumes of wastewater rich in organic contaminants and nutrients. These industries are highly exposed and under increasing pressure from changing environmental and regulatory requirements, at the same time advances in process design and environmental biotechnology are creating significant opportunities to reduce water use, recover resources and develop new and sustainable value-add products. To address these challenges and opportunities, the red meat processing industry is looking to upskill the current workforce and attract new skills through targeted education and professional development programs.

This program builds on a strong existing research partnership between UQ and Australian agricultural industries through development of a strategic education and extension partnership in the areas of waste, water, water treatment and reuse and environment. The multi-level program is designed to foster career development and to demonstrate that the meat processing industry contains broad opportunities. Demonstrating support for career paths at multiple development/qualification levels will assist in attracting outstanding personnel to the industry.
