It has been a difficult start to 2020, beginning with the country experiencing devastating bushfires. My sympathies go out to all families who lost loved ones or properties. We are a resilient nation and the fires showed how strong our sense of community and support is.

We are now facing a new challenge due to the spread of the COVID-19 virus, and while this is a rapidly changing situation, we have policies and procedures in place and AWMC will get through it with the same sense of cooperation, collaboration and community we always display.

Despite the challenges, our research continues. We are making steady progress and have submitted several new ARC Discovery Projects, ARC Linkage Projects and ARC Discovery Early Career Researcher Awards, with outcomes to be announced. In addition we have several large applications for various schemes currently in preparation. Thank you to all who are making the effort to apply.

Our Masters program continues to grow, with significant new enrolments, the majority of whom have made it to UQ. A warm welcome to our new students, and welcome back to our existing students.

We continue to have success with our Higher Degree by Research students, with 17 students submitting their PhD thesis between last year and now. AWMC continues to produce high quality HDR graduates, and I wish everyone the very best for their future careers.

We may be presented with some challenges in 2020, but we should remain positive and look ahead to another year of exciting and successful research.
