Chemical Engineering 101: The value and benefits of mass balances (Jurg Keller)

Abstract: While not everybody needs to be a chemical engineer, the concept of mass balances is one of the most versatile and beneficial approaches that can and should be applied regularly in most of our work. Mass balances are an easy yet powerful tool particularly in experimental work, and they are the basis of almost all of our mathematical modelling activities. This presentation will briefly explain the concept (without lots of equations), and then illustrate the application and benefits on some real examples from 20 years of research experience.

Title: Simple mass balance answers a significant research question (Zhiguo Yuan)

Abstract: The greenhouse research group has recently answered a signification research question in relation to CH4 emissions from a sludge drying lagoon. This results are not only of great value to the industry partner but also led to a paper that was easily accepted by Environmental Science and Technology (http://pubs.acs.org/doi/abs/10.1021/acs.est.5b04844). In this presentation, Professor Yuan will demonstrate the power of mass balance in engineering research and will also stress the value of attending AWMC seminars.
