Electrodialysis system for the extraction of caproic acid from mixed solutions of volatile fatty acids (Paula)

Abstract: A selective electrodialysis system with a strategic arrangement of ion‑exchange membranes and a specific set of conditions has been developed for the in‑situ separation and recovery of carboxylic acids. The process was evaluated on a synthetic heterogeneous broth that simulates the generic composition of a fermentation reactor or a digester performing VFA production and/or chain elongation. This selective electrodialysis system is able to remove and recover 97% ±0.02 of the acetate, 95% ±0.04 of the butyrate, and 94%±0.05 of the caproate into a product chamber, where caproate reaches supersaturation and spontaneously separates into a secondary phase with a purity of 70±0.015 %.
