AWMC Seminar Program: Novel mainstream partial nitrification process and its N2O emissions

Abstract: Beyond pollutants removal, wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are moving towards a water-energy nexus, with sustainability as a benchmark. In this regard, achieving energy neutral/ positive as well as minimizing carbon footprint are two major goals for WWTPs. Consequently, novel nitrogen removal processes such as partial nitrification-denitrification and partial nitrification-anammox have been proposed to reduce energy input in wastewater treatment. The stable NO2- accumulation via partial nitrification has been generally recognized as the critical step and bottleneck to both novel nitrogen removal processes, and the problem of NOB adaptation needs to be investigated for stable partial nitrification. On the other hand, N2O-the potent greenhouse gas emitted would compromise the benefits of novel processes. Therefore, mechanisms of N2O generations from partial nitrification process should be investigated in order to propose mitigation strategies. This research aims to propose novel technology for mainstream partial nitrification process and investigate its N2O emissions, in order to better balance the economic (reduce energy input and increase energy recovery) and environmental goal (reduce carbon footprint) for the sustainable development of WWTPs.
