AWMC Seminar Program: My story of fighting against nitrite-oxidising-bacteria (NOB) --- A novel way of achieving mainstream deammonification

Abstract: Achievement of reliable nitritation (NH4+ → NO2-) requiring stable nitrite-oxidising-bacteria (NOB) suppression, remains a key challenge for achieving energy-efficient nitrogen removal via the deammonification process in the mainstream line of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). In this study, a continuous-flow mainstream partial nitritation system was established, with an average NO2-/(NO2- + NO3-) ratio of above 95% for over 300 days and a high ammonium removal rate approximately 0.2 kg NH4+-N m-3 d-1. The established mainstream partial nitritation process would enable autotrophic nitrogen removal via anammox, which is critical for the on-going paradigm shift from energy-negative to energy-neutral/positive in the WWTPs.
