AWMC Seminar Program - Kareem Abood

This Friday (9:00-10:00 am, 11th October, 2019), Mr Kareem Abood (PhD student, AWMC) will give his first year confirmation presentation.

Title: Computational Fluid Dynamics Modelling of Anaerobic Lagoons

Abstract: Anerobic lagoons are widely used process in waste water treatment and several other industries as a cost-effective method of removing COD/BOD and generating renewable energy from the relatively low value intensive energy by product bio gas, as the chemical process is popular and widely studied in several other arrangements/reactor types, but due to the usually large scale of lagoons and lack of instruments/mechanical interference, monitoring and studying lagoons becomes extremely difficult. Computational Fluid Dynamics has been used in many industries and in anaerobic digestion in most types of reactors mostly to improve mixing optimization, and evaluate process efficiency, however the scale and complexity of anaerobic lagoons makes utilizing CFD modelling a difficult task because the case is unique and cannot be treated as a general template from other approaches used in different reactors not to mention from other industries. Too many issues to balance from the aspect ratio on the geometry/meshing, the solver and sub models being used, the lack of validation experiments on such large scale, the margin of error with that kind of scale and many other categories to consider. Literally speaking the last attempt to simulate full scale lagoon using CFD modelling was in 2002, 17 years has passed and there has been major advances in the computational realm that could make it more feasible to achieve that goal and have a full dynamic model of anaerobic lagoons that could predict solids behaviour, gas production, scum formation, and ultimately improve the overall performance of the lagoons.
