AWMC Seminar Program: Integrated real time control of urban wastewater systems: moving towards digital twins

Prof. Guangtao Fu

Abstract: The digitization of water is transforming the global water business and services. Information and communications technologies are being integrated with water infrastructure and big data collected at an unprecedented speed worldwide. In this talk, I will first introduce a new paradigm for urban water management. Then I will discuss the role of real time control in improving the performance of urban wastewater systems and demonstrate, through case studies, how the river water quality risk is reduced and system resilience is improved. The challenges in moving towards digital twins are also discussed.

Bio: Guangtao Fu is professor of water intelligence at the Centre for Water Systems, University of Exeter and currently a Royal Society Industry Fellow and Turing Fellow. His research focuses on developing and applying new computer models, data analytics and artificial intelligence tools for urban water management. He has worked extensively on integrated modelling and real time control of urban water systems, impact assessment of green infrastructure and development of innovative solutions for sustainable and resilient water systems.

AWMC hosts a free seminar every Friday from 9am.
