AWMC Seminar Program: Guest Speakers from TZW: DVGW - Technologiezentrum Wasser

Andreas Tiehm (Professor and Head, Microbiology and Molecular Biology) and Claudia Stange (Research Scientist) will  give us a special seminar. 

Title: Introduction to Water Technology Center (TZW), pollutants biodegradation, and molecular detection methods for water quality monitoring (Andreas)

Abstract: Examples will be presented for recent studies into pollutant (e.g. chloroethenes, pharmaceutical residues) biodegradation processes and rapid microbiological detection methods. In recent years, there have been developments in molecular techniques which have ushered new opportunities for water quality assessment and monitoring concepts, e.g. applicable in bioremediation approaches, environmental monitoring and drinking water treatment. Need for a rapid, specific and sensitive detection of pathogens in water presents a key challenge in modern water quality monitoring. The talk focuses on the recent progress, future research needs and opportunities for a joint German-Australian partnership to advance  monitoring techniques and risk mitigation strategies.

Title: Occurrence of antibiotic resistances in the aquatic environment and elimination by water treatment (Claudia)

Abstract: The increasing frequency of infections by resistant bacteria, which cannot be treated by classic antibiotics, is a global threat for human health. Due to the widespread use of antibiotics in human and veterinary medicine resistances have spread in the environment during the last few years. Multi resistant bacteria are also increasingly found in the population, unrelated to hospitalization, suggesting the transfer of resistant pathogens from the environment into humans. However, knowledge with respect to antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in raw water used for drinking water production is limited.
