Open source software for computational fluid dynamics
Abstract: The simulation of partial differential equations has previously required investment in heavily expensive licenses, or the nous and patience to start developing solvers from a blank screen. OpenFOAM, released in 2004, is a collection of C++ libraries which provide CFD functionality at a very high level for the end user. This makes the package highly extensible, the user can focus on the physics, rather than the code, the source code is transparent, and it is freely available to install on all operating systems. It is for these reasons that I have decided to use OpenFOAM. This presentation offers a run through of the general functionality of OpenFOAM, as well as a demonstration of the libraries, solvers, and simulations I have developed and during this PhD.
