An Overview of Waste Management Research in the Red Meat Processing Sector: The Challenges, Progress and Future Opportunities

Abstract: Waste production within agri-industry represents significant challenges and opportunities for industry and researchers alike. Agricultural industries are among the largest land users, water consumers and organic waste producers within Australia. In particular, red meat processing facilities can generate large volumes of wastewater rich in organic contaminants and nutrients. These industries are highly exposed and under increasing pressure from changing environmental and regulatory requirements, at the same time advances in process design and environmental biotechnology are creating significant opportunities to recover resources and develop new and sustainable value-add products.

Over the past 7 years the AWMC has established a number of major collaborating research partnerships within the sector. This talk will present an overview of one such partnership - with the Australian Meat Processor Corporation (AMPC). The presentation will include a summary of waste production and current treatment practices, along with an outline of the existing research being conducted at AWMC and some discussion of emerging opportunities and future research directions.
