Combating Antibiotic Resistance Widespread in Urban Water Cycle

The intensive use of antibiotics results in their continuous release into the environment and the subsequent widespread occurrence of antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). Although antibiotic resistance has been recognised as a major threat to human health worldwide, the related phenomenon occurring in natural and engineered environments has been largely overlooked so far. The urban water cycle, which connects urban life, agriculture and the environment, is potentially a hot spot for the spread of ARGs. Therefore, a better understanding of the distribution, transportation, and acquisition of ARGs in the urban water cycle is critically important to improve the control of this emerging environmental and human health challenge. This presentation will briefly summarize our preliminary studies in occurrence, fate and transformations of ARGs in the urban water cycle. Through Illumina high-throughput sequencing, we have investigated the broad-spectrum profiles of both ARGs and mobile genetic elements (MGEs) in activated sludge and anaerobically digested sludge from a full-scale wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). Our findings increase our understanding of WWTPs as a hotspot of ARGs and MGEs, and contribute towards preventing their release into the downstream environment. In addition, I will briefly introduce our current and on-going studies about the mechanism of ARGs acquisition and transfer among different microbial organisms and communities.
