AWMC Seminar Program: Development of a Novel Smouldering-Based Method for Targeted Resource Recovery from Sewage Sludge

Abstract: Considering the existing economic and practical limitations of existing sludge management strategies as well as the increasing concerns for the presence of emerging contaminants present in sludge, there is a general interest for more cost-effective technologies that can achieve complete dewatering of the sludge and can effectively ‘destroy’ emerging contaminants such as PFAS. Moreover, as we are entering an era of the circular economy, new sludge management approaches should allow for the recovery of valuable resources embedded in the sludge. There is a general interest by the water industry in alternative cost-effective sludge dewatering methods. In this context, recently smouldering combustion of wastewater sludge has received increasing attention. Smouldering is a slow, low-temperature, self-sustaining flameless form of combustion that overcomes the limitations of conventional incineration by efficiently transferring the heat generated by the heterogeneous reaction to the unburned fuel (sludge), enabling self-sustaining combustion. Recently, the proof-of-concept of smouldering of sludge was demonstrated through batch laboratory-scale experiments. While the results were promising, significant effort is needed beyond the proof-of-concept to fundamentally understand the smouldering process and develop a technology that can be scaled up and ultimately implemented by the industry at full-scale.
