Impact of temperature on process kinetics, inhibition mechanisms and implications for anaerobic co-digestion - Catherine Macintosh

Abstract: Recently there has been interest in Anaerobic co-digestion (AcoD) involving the simultaneous anaerobic digestion of two or more waste-streams. To date there has been very little evaluation of co-digestion at temperatures other than 37°C which increases the risk of AcoD considering the large range of anaerobic processes operating at different temperatures and the large seasonal variations in some processes. Temperature is known to significantly impact the biochemical and physio-chemical processes involved in anaerobic digestion, however previous studies investigating temperature have produced inconsistent or inconclusive results. Detailed fundamental analyses are still required to understand impacts on substrate characteristics and digestion microbiology and capture the implications for AcoD. In particular, there is a poor understanding of how temperature impacts the activity and balance of key trophic groups involved in AD. Therefore, the PhD project will develop fundamental knowledge about the influence of temperature on process kinetics and inhibition mechanisms involved in anaerobic digestion. Knowledge will be generated about the influence of temperature on different digestion substrates as well as how temperature may impact the co-digestion capacity of an anaerobic digestion system.
