  • Dr Jianhua Guo (r) collects the award on behalf of Beijing University of Technology and AWMC. Award conferred by Nobel Laureate Alan J. Heeger (l) from California University.

Advanced Water Management Centre (AWMC) has been given an award by the Commission of Science and Technology of the Beijing City Government, in recognition of their highly successful collaborative research with Beijing University of Technology (BJUT) in biological wastewater treatment and process control.

AWMC was presented with the International Cooperation Award at the Briefing on International Science and Technology Cooperation held in Beijing on Jan 30, being one of only five foreign institutes to receive the accolade this year. AWMC’s award came about as a result of their long-term collaboration with BJUT, where Prof. Zhiguo Yuan has been an Honorary Professor.

The research work Prof. Yuan conducted with Prof. Yongzhen Peng at BJUT focused on developing sustainable wastewater treatment processes and establishing advanced process control for enhancing pollutant removal efficiency. This is especially useful for wastewater treatment plants for protecting water environment and recovering resources from wastewater, which are highly beneficial to both the Australian and Chinese water industries. The successful cooperation relationship between AWMC and BJUT has spanned over 10 years. The cooperation has produced many achievements, including more than 20 co-authored papers, 3 joint projects and 4 co-supervised Ph.D students.

“Our work, together with colleagues in Beijing, is helping to provide fundamental support to the development of new processes that enable more sustainable wastewater treatment and water recycling processes. It will play an important role in alleviating water resource deficiency and solving water pollution problems in many regions.” Prof Yuan said.
