Technical Site Visits

Technical site visits will take place on the afternoon of Wednesday 26th September 2007. These are optional and are not included in the registration fees. The cost of each is AUD $35.00 including 10% GST and please note that there is only time to do one (1) visit. If you wish to attend please indicate on your registration form. The three options for the site visits are:-
Oxley Creek Water Reclamation Plant
240 Donaldson Rd, Rocklea
Brisbane, QLD
Cost: $ 35
Maximum Participants: 80

In February 2007 Brisbane launched a $116 million upgrade of the city's Oxley Creek Water Reclamation Plant. This plant treats sewage and industrial wastes to produce high quality recycled water. Sludges from the plant are pre-treated by an hydrolysis process prior to anaerobic digestion. This is the first application in Australia of this combined process to produce a pathogen-free biosolids product.

The Cambi thermal hydrolysis process (THP) has been utilised to pre-treat dewatered waste activated sludge prior to mesophilic anaerobic digestion. The Brisbane THP and anaerobic digestion plant will be able to treat more than 10,000 dry tonnes per year of extended aeration sludge. The plant has been sized to process additional sludges trucked-in from four other suburban treatment plants. The Cambi process allows a doubling of digester capacity, reduces sludge mass and volume by increasing biogas production and dewaterability, while converting the sludge to a low odour, pathogen-free soil conditioner.

This site visit will walk through the upgrade of the treatment plant and explore the benefits of the Cambi process to the city of Brisbane.

Foster's Brewery Yatala Yatala, Gold Coast, QLD
Cost: $ 35
Maximum Participants: 100

The Foster's Brewery at Yatala supplies approximately 25% of the beer consumed in Australia. In 2003 Foster's embarked on an upgrade program, investing over $172 in the project to double the previous production capacity. This facility is now the world's most water-efficient major brewery with an average water consumption of only 2.3L per 1L of beer produced. During its expansion, the brewery worked with Gold Coast Water to reduce its impacts and to incorporate water reuse initiatives that complement the region's overall salinity, water and wastewater strategy. The innovative system has also resulted in significant reductions in salt discharge from the brewery and in the consumption of cleaning chemicals, while minimising energy and greenhouse gas impacts. On 16 May 2006 Foster's Australia won the Industrial Eco-Efficiency Award in the inaugural Environmental Protection Agency Sustainable Industries Awards for recycling and reducing water use at the Yatala brewery.

Foster's has been brewing at Yatala since 1993. The "Brewhouse" visitor's centre has been open to the public since 1996. This site visit will provide a fascinating insight into the brewing process and water recycling facility, including a tour around the brewery, visit of wastewater treatment and recycling facility and a complimentary tasting. Enclosed footwear must be worn for safety reasons.

VISY Pulp & Paper Mill Gibson Island, QLD
Cost: $ 35
Maximum participants: 80

Visy is a financially, Environmentally and Socially conscience company which strives to make the world a better place.

Visy Pulp & Paper produces virgin kraft and 100% recycled corrugated paper for the packaging & building industries from its seven paper machines in Australia - six 100% recycled machines, located in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane and its new plantation pine kraft pulp and paper mill at Tumut in New South Wales. In the USA, Visy has two recycling mills, one in Atlanta and one in New York, producing 600,000 tonnes per annum. Together these machines produce more than 1.75 million tonnes of packaging paper of which 1.45 million tonnes is 100% recycled testliner, coated liner and plasterboard liner and 320,000 tonnes from virgin unbleached kraft.

The Brisbane plant (VP8), and our site visit destination, is located on Gibson Island in Brisbane, Queensland. VP8 commenced operations in 1996 and produces the widest range of products of all Visy Paper machines. One of the world's most technologically advanced paper recycling mills, VP8 was the winner of the 1997 Engineering Excellence Award. The installation includes a 1800 m3 high-rate upflow anaerobic sludge blanket digester, designed by EnviroAsia, with a moderate loading rate, but with high input calcium.
