Dr Andrea Tilche
European Commission
- DG Research - I.2
Head of the Unit
"Environmental Technologies
and Pollution Prevention"
Andrea Tilche obtained his doctoral degree in Agricultural Sciences at the University of Milano in 1978. His scientific career was mainly carried out in Italy where he set-up and directed the wastewater treatment laboratories of ENEA in Bologna, working on advanced anaerobic treatment and biological nutrient removal technologies. He has been the chairman of the Specialist Group on Anaerobic Digestion of IWA from 1997 to 1999. In 1998 he moved to the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission in Ispra as Head of the Water Research and Monitoring Unit, and later moved to Brussels to lead the Water Key Action of the 5th Framework Programme. He is now Head of the Unit "Environmental Technologies and Pollution Prevention" within the Environment Directorate of DG Research.
Prof Willy Verstraete
Laboratory of Microbial Ecology
and Technology (LabMET),
Ghent University, Belgium
Willy is a truly multi-disciplinary expert in the environmental field. He graduated in 1968 as Bio-Engineer (Gent University, Belgium) and received his PhD in 1971 in Microbiology (Cornell University, USA). He has an impressive background in many diverse fields spanning from microbial fuel cells over biological nutrient removal and anaerobic digestion processes to artificial intestines. He leads one of the most active and innovative research groups in Environmental Biotechnology, Microbial Ecology and Wastewater Engineering in Europe and has published over 500 journal articles in his 30+ year career. He also works closely with industry partners and has several patented inventions that are applied in the field. Using his vast experience in this field, he also likes to challenge "common" views and foster new ideas and concepts in many research and industry areas.
Prof. Dr. Ir. Jules B. van Lier
Chair Anaerobic Wastewater Treatment for Reuse and Irrigation
Wageningen University
Prof.Dr. Jules van Lier got his BSc in Microbiology at Nijmegen University, The Netherlands (1985) and his MSc in Environmental Technology at Wageningen University, The Netherlands(1988). He performed his PhD on Thermophilic Anaerobic Wastewater Treatment under the supervision of Prof. Gatze Lettinga (1995), also at Wageningen University. Between 1993 and 2005 he was senior researcher / project manager in various (inter)national research projects, working on cost-effective water treatment for resource recovery (water, nutrients, biogas, elements). Research projects are focused on closing water cycles in industries and sewage water recovery for irrigated agriculture. The further development of anaerobic treatment technology has his prime focus. He published over 185 publications in double refereed journals and conference proceedings from 1988 onwards. In October 2005 he was appointed as Professor at Wageningen University, attached to the special chair on "Anaerobic Wastewater Treatment for Reuse and Irrigation".
In addition to the university work he was director of the Lettinga Associates Foundation (LeAF) form April 1997 - October 2005. LeAF is a not-for profit organization that stimulates the application of appropriate environmental technologies for environmental protection and resource conservation, with anaerobic treatment as the core technology. At present he is scientific advisor to the LeAF Foundation.
Prof.Dr. van Lier is chairman of the Anaerobic Digestion Specialist group of the International Water Association (IWA).
